Seller offers one clearance figureEstablish the configuration and measurement behind it, then assess the actual route. A lowest-point reference alone cannot approve an entrance transition or the full loaded manoeuvre.
Daily load differs from the viewing setupGive the provider the ordinary occupants and luggage arrangement. Keep scope and limitations explicit instead of assuming an empty-car observation covers the customer’s whole routine.
A modification is suggested before diagnosisObtain competent suitability review and the completed-job scope before approval. An untested alteration should not turn an unresolved access requirement into a guaranteed outcome.
01

Describe where the concern occurs

Ask whether the problem is an entrance transition, raised centre, steep ramp or another part of the ordinary route. Obtain useful measurements and photographs of the access, keeping them distinct from vehicle measurements. The saloon name does not establish suitable geometry. A nominal lowest-point figure answers only part of the task. Record the actual concern so an appropriate provider can identify the information needed. The buyer should not select a car from a generic clearance number when the access requirement remains undefined or a risky trial would be the only evidence proposed.

02

Identify the exterior and chassis setup

Confirm the body, actual wheels, relevant lower pieces and disclosed changes on the candidate. Use the installed suspension review rather than infer the arrangement from a mode selector or appearance package. A different bumper or accessory can matter to the access concern even if the basic model wording is unchanged. Ask a competent provider which dimensions and conditions they need. Keep original equipment and modifications separate. The purchasing assessment should describe the actual delivered setup, not an idealised C180 whose reference has been copied from another generation or market.

03

Include the normal occupant and luggage load

Describe the customer's ordinary load and have it considered appropriately within the vehicle's applicable guidance. An empty viewing car may not represent everyday use. Do not invent a universal loading threshold or assume a suspension adjustment is a suitable fix. The wheel and tyre record identifies the fitted combination and any proposed change that a provider needs to review. Keep actual measurements and estimates distinguishable. The buyer needs the assessment limits clearly stated before relying on the result for daily access, particularly when the route offers little margin for an unsupported assumption.

04

Arrange a safe, competent assessment

Where a practical demonstration is appropriate, use a capable operator and safe conditions. Do not recommend driving until something contacts the surface or deliberately creating damage to investigate the concern. A provider can decide whether a different method or further information is needed. Record the actual route and test scope. Existing marks or reported underside work should receive qualified review rather than an invented event history. The dealer should have supportable findings and limits before advising the owner, with no claim that a broad saloon clearance figure guarantees safe passage through every irregular entrance.

05

Compare supported alternatives honestly

If the access does not meet the requirement, ask whether an appropriate supported configuration change exists and what complete work it involves. A wheel, suspension or exterior modification remains provisional until suitability is established by the responsible provider. Include compatible components, installation and relevant checks before comparing costs. Do not price an untested alteration as an achieved result. Another candidate or an explicit revised brief may be more practical. The buying decision should explain the options available on evidence rather than promise that every clearance concern can be corrected cheaply after the car has been purchased.

06

Keep access conditions in the vehicle approval

Write the assessed route, load, configuration and limits with the actual candidate. Name changes that would require renewed review. New cars need delivered-specification confirmation; used ones add current condition and relevant repair evidence. A substitute should not inherit approval from the same C180 label. At handover, retain the provider response and accepted setup so the customer understands what was assessed. A useful result is a specific decision about this car and driveway, without an unlimited clearance guarantee or a claim that a styling package and tyre change resolve every rough-access problem.

Keep the entrance and occupant-access check alongside a supported ramp result when the complete parking route contains more than one constraint.

Buyer questions

Can a clearance number guarantee driveway fit?

No. Assess actual geometry, configuration and relevant load together.

Should a test deliberately contact the ramp?

No. Use a competent safe assessment and do not create damage as an investigation method.
