Buying situationEvidence for the decision
Bay dimensions appear sufficientCheck the approach, mirrors and occupant door space before approval. A final parked footprint does not establish that the customer can reach and use the position safely.
Different wheelbase is proposed laterRepeat essential access assessment for the actual substitute. Similar model wording cannot guarantee the same envelope, entry arrangement or manoeuvring requirements.
Seller relies on camera equipmentVerify the available views while retaining physical fit checks. Observation aids cannot resolve missing clearance or an unassessed ramp or entrance constraint.
01

Identify the saloon being measured

Confirm generation, body and actual exterior configuration before relying on a size reference. Use the body and wheelbase record rather than transfer dimensions from another C-Class. Clarify whether a quoted width includes mirrors and retain the measurement convention. Accessories or disclosed changes may need separate review. A photograph is not a measuring method, and one general C180 figure cannot approve every offered saloon. The buyer needs information for the actual candidate so a space-dependent purchase is not based on similar styling, a familiar badge or an unrelated original-market reference.

02

Measure the approach as well as the bay

Record the narrowest entrance, nearby walls or posts and the space available to position the car. A vehicle can fit when parked but still be difficult to manoeuvre through the normal route. Measure where the clearance matters rather than at the widest point. Arrange a safe practical assessment by an appropriate driver where possible and avoid a risky squeeze through a marginal gap. If the route cannot be assessed, retain it as an open requirement. The dealer should know the daily task the customer must perform rather than treat the final bay dimensions as complete evidence.

03

Check mirror operation and useful views

Identify fitted mirror functions and use them appropriately under applicable guidance. Do not assume folding is included or that operating with folded mirrors is a substitute for adequate observation. Review actual camera or sensor functions through the vehicle equipment file. A display can help with a suitable manoeuvre while leaving the physical envelope unchanged. Keep what was demonstrated and its limits in the record. The buyer should be able to distinguish a useful visibility feature from evidence that the saloon can pass safely through the route, without approving the car merely because its package includes parking technology.

04

Include people and ordinary loading access

Assess the space needed for normal entry and exit after the car is positioned. A wide-open viewing forecourt can hide the customer's regular door-clearance problem. Include relevant passenger or restraint arrangements using applicable instructions and appropriate guidance. Check access to the usual boot load as part of the ordinary routine. An empty vehicle fitting between lines is not the complete result. Record the practical arrangement and limitations so the sales team can explain whose use was assessed. A car should meet the buyer's daily requirements for entering, travelling and unloading, not just occupy the parking footprint.

05

Review irregular access with competent help

Where ramps, low clearances or another geometric concern matters, obtain appropriate vehicle-specific assessment. Keep actual load and accessory conditions with the provider's response. A general model number cannot establish passage through every driveway. Do not infer suitability because another vehicle managed once or propose an unassessed change as a guaranteed remedy. If the practical route remains unsuitable, compare another candidate or discuss a revised brief. Access can outweigh an equipment benefit, especially when the owner would face the same problem every day. The decision should follow supported information without exposing the car or people to a hazardous trial.

06

Retain garage fit through the selection

Write the accepted body, measurements, relevant functions and practical observations into the buying brief. State which substitution or configuration change needs renewed review. New proposals need delivered-equipment confirmation; used ones also need current operation of the relevant features. Keep the assessment and its conditions with the actual candidate. At receiving, compare the delivered car with that record. The dealer should explain why the particular saloon fits the ordinary access routine without promising garage suitability from the C180 name or claiming that mirrors and cameras remove the need for physical clearance.

If a ramp adds a separate access concern, the driveway review uses the actual configuration, geometry and normal load rather than a general clearance figure.

Buyer questions

Is garage width alone enough?

No. Include the approach, mirrors, doors and relevant route geometry.

Can a long-wheelbase label be ignored in parking checks?

No. Identify and assess the actual body before applying a measurement reference.
